Delicious cake from my mother-in-law. Brown sugar, cinnamon and apples layered between a coffee cake like batter, then drizzled with a brown sugar sauce. Perfect fall dessert!

Basic Cake Batter
- 1⅓ cup all purpose flour
- 1 tbsp baking powder
- ½ tsp salt
- ¼ cup shortening soft
- 1 egg slightly beaten
- ¾ cup milk
Apple mixture
- 4 medium apples
- ⅓ cup brown sugar
- ½ tsp cinnamon
Brown Sugar Sauce
- ½ cup brown sugar firmly packed
- 1 tbsp cornstarch
- ⅛ tsp salt
- 1 cup water warm
- 1 tbsp butter
- 1 tsp vanilla
Measure flour into mixing bowl. Add sugar, baking powder and salt. Stir to blend well.
Cut in shortening with pastry blender of two knives until mixture resemble coarse meal.
Make a hollow and add egg and milk. Combine with dry ingredients, mixing until flour is moistened.
Grease an 8" square baking dish.
Peel, core and slice apples into a bowl, mix brown sugar and cinnamon and mix with apples.
Spread half the batter in prepared pan.
Cover with about half the sliced apples. Spread on remaining batter.
Arrange balance of apple slices in pattern on top.
Bake in 350°F oven for 45-50 minutes.
While cooking prepare brown sugar sauce.Combine sugar, Cornstarch and salt in saucepan. Add warm water stirring constantly. Cook over low heat, stirring constantly, until thick and smooth ( 3-5 minutes). Remove from heat, add butter and vanilla. Drizzle on cake pieces.
