Paradise Falls – book to read

Paradise Falls

My sister sent me this book last week. I can’t recommend it enough! It’s a true account about Love Canal and the environmental disaster that ensured from the chemical dumping that occurred there. We grew up < 15 miles from the location in the 1970s-1980s and had heard about it and knew of the location. It was just a couple blocks away from the Summit Park Mall, the closest mall we had at the time.

Chemical contamination was nothing new to us, we lived down the street from the LOOW (Lake Ontario Ordnance Works) site where radioactive (and other waste) from the Manhattan project was stored and had radon detectors in our house and yard that were monitored. It’s a wonder we don’t all glow 🙁 …

I remember my mother and a few neighbors would always go to the Town hall meetings to try and get something done to ensure our safety. The school we went to was right next to the LOOW site as well. I’m attaching a paper I wrote on it from a class I took at Niagara University if you are interested in reading it.

I got this for Christmas from my son and now can’t wait until spring to get here so I can put it to good use. I’ll have to pay more attention to the leaves and how they are arranged on the plant so I can make better identifications. I’d been using the Seek app on my phone but it isn’t entirely accurate, but certainly a good starting place. I like the step by step method of identification but would love some more color pictures. I may have to supplement this with another. If anyone has any favorite wildflower id books, let me know in the comments!
